The "Designing Tomorrow Club" at Strath Haven Middle School in Wallingford had big plans for a big project. Their client, the School's Student Council, had surveyed students and the winning project idea was to create something that would reflect their pride in their school and incorporate their mascot, the panther. So, the Club set out to design, engineer and construct an enormous sculptural sign for the entrance of their newly renovated school. The 14-member club, brainchild of school district parent and architect Bob Reid, gave middle-schoolers first-hand experience at a range of professions and trades; from engineering and carpentry to cement pouring and drafting. Reid led the way, but emphasized that the kids did the work, "there were times when some had doubts that kids this age would be capable of some of the tasks involved in a project of this complexity, but I was confident they were equal to the challenge."
The big project had a small budget, giving the students the opportunity to gain experience in one more area – proposal-writing. They requested and received funding from the School's Home and School Association and sought donations from community businesses. As work progressed, the project also inspired donations of time and materials from contractors who were on site finishing up the renovations to the school. Plush Mills was a major contributor to the project. Founder Kelly Cook Andress was on hand at the dedication Friday. "One of the things that's unique about Plush Mills is that we are truly a part of our community. More than 150 Nether Providence residents make their homes at Plush Mills; many lived in and around the school district before they moved in, and many of our employees live in the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. So, helping with this project was something that we were happy to do."

In a program sponsored by Plush Mills Senior Living, Attorney Linda Anderson of Anderson Elder Law will offer key questions that can guide a conversation between seniors and their adult children in planning for the future. Questions like "Who should speak for you if you can't speak for yourself?" and "Is it your plan to age in place (or is there no plan?)." Ms. Anderson will also discuss documents like wills and powers of attorney and why they are crucial. She'll provide an overview of community services, the continuum of care and assessing the financial aspects when planning. These can be difficult topics to broach with loved ones, but they are necessary to avoid potential crises. The program will be held on September 28th at 7 pm at The Helen Kate Furness Free Library at 100 North Providence Road in Wallingford. To register, call Plush Mills at 610-690-1630 or call the Library at 610-566-9331.
