Vintage Cars Return to Plush Mills

For the second year in a row, the Plush Mills Antique Car Show took place under sunny summer skies.  Members of Delaware County's Road Runners Club brought more than a dozen cars from past decades of American life, including this firecracker-red 1940 Chevrolet convertible.

The oldest car was this 1912 black Model T.

While most cars have horns, this vehicle also has an organ and a drum.

Showing great style, a blue Model A Ford and its driver.

And a fabulous Jaguar from the golden age of English sportscars.

Normally these parking spaces are all taken up by Hondas, SUVs, minivans, and hybrids.

The Road Runners enjoyed the chance to sit a bit in the cool shade.

The Art of Painting at Plush Mills

Our Great Room is the scene of multiple activities throughout the day.  This is where one resident keeps her loom, her weaving books and patterns, and her yarn.  It is where our yoga classes take place, and special presentations from schoolchildren.  A jigsaw puzzle is constantly underway, and residents frequently gather here for special occasions.  It is also where our residents work on their art.

Margaret Ewing, a Rose Valley resident, teaches painting at Plush Mills.  Margaret has also taught schoolchildren in local classrooms and adults at the Community Art Center.  With a passion for painting and a knack for teaching, Margaret's weekly sessions at Plush Mills are always highly anticipated events.

Chat & Stitch

Each Friday morning, a group gathers in the library to chat, knit, crochet, stitch, and craft.

They help each other with projects, share stories and memories, and create gifts and keepsakes.

The warmth of yarn and the coolness of needles are a familiar, and comfortable, combination.  Stop by on a Friday morning and check out the latest projects.

Exhibit of Paintings by Plush Mills Artist

An exhibit of paintings by Plush Mills resident Bob Hogan drew a crowd of admirers recently, including three generations of the artist's family.

Granddaughter Julie Oetinger, wife Jean Hogan, and daughter Nancy Oetinger chose to be photographed with this favorite painting created in 1974, which depicts Jean as a little girl on Long Island, standing with her brother.

Beaches, gardens, and close-ups of flowers brought the beauty of nature indoors to our lobby.  Attendees enjoyed a wine and cheese party throughout the art exhibit.

The artist has turned the den of his Plush Mills apartment into a painting studio.  His family reports that he frequently changes the art display on his own walls to match the seasons or his moods.

It is inspiring to have so many talented people living under one roof.  Thank you to Bob Hogan for sharing your beautiful paintings with us.

Spring Fling Adds Zing

With the snow truly gone and winter definitely over, it was time to celebrate spring.

Plush Mills did that in style on April 9, with an afternoon Spring Fling featuring live music, a special menu, and lots of beautiful colors.  Even the carrots and radishes became flowers for the occasion, and edible pansies decorated the salsa.

Coming up on April 14 and April 27, two local garden clubs will set up flower shows at Plush Mills - a further celebration of spring.

Enjoyed by residents, family, friends, and staff, here are some snapshots of Spring Fling.

Protect Your Estate from Taxes and Probate

Providing for your heirs can turn into a hair-raising experience.  Join us Thursday, April 8 at 6:30 PM to learn important strategies for protecting your estate.

Like many people, you may hope to leave a substantial legacy for your loved ones.  But without proper planning and the appropriate financial strategies, you may not be able to protect your assets from the effects of estate taxes and probate.  Consequently, your estate may be settled in ways you did not intend, and your heirs may receive a diminished inheritance.

At our special educational workshop, you'll learn about:

Calculating the value of your estate

Benefits of estate conservation

Intestacy and how it affects estate distribution

Probate and how to avoid it

Estimating your estate tax liability

Strategies to help reduce estate taxes

Estate distribution techniques including wills and trusts

You'll take home a workbook on estate planning.  This contains essential information, exercises, and questions that will help you assess your current situation and develop a strategy for preserving your assets.

Presented by Swarthmore Financial Services, speakers will be Julie Steele, and Harris J. Resnick, Esq. of Resnick Elder Law.

Family, friends and neighbors welcome!  Join us Thursday, April 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the Plush Mills Theater.  Please call 610 690 1630 to make reservations, or register with the Concierge at the front desk.

Maximizing Veterans' Benefits - April 1 at 6:30 in the Theater

Don't miss this important seminar April 1 at 6:30!

Are either you or your spouse a veteran:

*with 90 days of consecutive, active military service, 1 day served during wartime?

*with a discharge of any kind other than dishonorable?

*at least age 65?

If you can answer yes to these questions, then you should apply for your benefit!

Learn how you can:

*quality for little-known, little-used veterans' benefits...of up to $23,396 per year TAX FREE!

According to a VA estimate, only 1 in 7 of the widows of vets who probably qualify for the pension actually get the monthly checks.

A VA study stays that the veterans generally "are completely unaware that the program exists."

The VA knows that many veterans and widows are missing out on the benefit

Less than 8 percent of veterans and 14 percent of widows receive the money available to them.

Come hear Scott Ferguson discuss these topics and more.  Scott is a much-sought-after speaker and has helped many people with the benefits they can receive through the Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

To make reservations, call 610-690-1630 or register with the Concierge at the front desk.  Join us in the Theater Thursday April 1 at 6:30.

The Wearing of the Green

After a long and snowy winter, the Plush Mills celebration of St. Patrick's Day was more than an ode to the Emerald Isle, it was also a nod to the bits of green finally appearing outside the windows.

Festivities began on Friday, March 12 with Irish dancers.  A few days later, there was singing and a harpist.  And on the 17th, we threw a party in the pub, followed by a special dinner.  Enjoy the pictures, and cheers!

The Five Biggest Scams Seniors Need to Know About - Free Seminar on 2/25

We've all seen the email pleas from total strangers, asking for just a little financial help while they regain their kingdom in Africa.  Such emails are, of course, written by con artists and are not to be trusted, but not long ago, even a Pennsylvania politician fell prey to just such a plea from a "Nigerian prince."

Elderlaw attorney Dana Breslin, a frequent speaker at Plush Mills, will be here on Thursday, February 25 at 6:30 to address a very important topic:  The Five Biggest Scams Seniors Need to Know About.

Dana will discuss Living Trusts, Annuities, Insurance Scams, E-Mail Chain Letters, and Get Rich Schemes.

There will be a Q&A session following the free presentation.

The public is invited - tell your friends!

Cruise Party Chases the Blues

At the end of a bitterly cold January, we decided to throw a Cruise Ship theme party in our lobby.

The food was tropicallly fabulous.

A Joyful Noise provided fantastic entertainment.

And with party attire ranging from turquoise to navy, we indeed succeeded in chasing the blues away.
